what are some mix-ins for oatmeal cookies recipe

This go-to oatmeal cookies recipe is so special. A crowd pleaser, easy to pack, can be dressed up or down. Just add your favorite mix-ins for any occasion.

I love having the kids home (on and off) for the holidays. Besides all of the holiday traditional foods, I love to make their favorites. I do believe my go-to oatmeal cookies recipe was the first cookies the twins ate and 23 years later, they are still the ones I bake when they come home. And I bake them a lot just to have in the house.

What makes this oatmeal cookies recipe special is that they are always a crowd pleaser and pack and travel well. They are the ones I dress up for parties and bring to friends all year long.  The recipe is so versatile, you can add the mix-ins to fit the season or the occasion.

One tip for making these simple cookies fancy is to dip them in powdered sugar about 3 minutes after they come out of the oven. This makes them fancy and a sweet bite.

A few of my favorite mix-ins for the holiday season are Cranberries and Pistachios and White Chocolate Chips and Dried Cherries. Yum….

Questions we are frequently asked about Oatmeal Cookies…

Can I use quick oats to make Oatmeal Cookies?

Yes, but Old Fashioned Rolled Oats are always the best.

Are oatmeal cookies healthy for you?

Oatmeal is a whole grain cereal considered to have many health benefits.  This is one of the reasons I always choose to make oatmeal cookies. But, of course, we are not health experts and will not make any health claims.

Why do my cookies always go flat?

Sometimes things just happen.  Here are some of the top reasons why cookies go flat when baking:

  1. The oven temperature is too hot.
  2. Your baking powder and baking soda are too old. Yes, these can go bad and you want to make sure they are still active.
  3. You forgot to take out your butter the night before and melt the butter.
  4. Your cookie sheets need to be replaced.

A side note…

Why I choose Florida Crystals you might ask? First it is organic! But even more importantly, it is organic sugar that bakes well. Often, the way in which organic sugars are processed means they can be difficult to bake with but not with Florida Crystals. Second, it is made here in the US and is harvested and milled the same day. Finally, and just as importantly, Florida Crystals has the same high standards that I do when it comes to the environment, including using renewable energy operations.
