One of the best things about Ironman 70.3 Texas, Galveston is that if you are staying on site at Moody Gardens, the food is consistent and you can count on a hearty breakfast buffet with real eggs and fruit and clean restaurant food that caters to the athletes and families. I hate to admit it, but we rarely venture out too far for a meal, except dinner. When we do, there are wonderful options that you can count on and I’ll give you a few of our standbys.
When traveling to destinations like Galveston, we tend to stick with what we know and we know Landry’s. They have a large collection of restaurants and the restaurant on site at Moody Gardens will cook to order a chicken breast plain and has good pasta – both triathlete needs on the night before the race. The Landry’s collection has 9 restaurants nearby, including the Rainforest Cafe. Make sure you leave extra time if venturing here for the boat ride.
If you’re looking for a good steak, try Saltgrass Steak House. And, if it is seafood you want for the family, you have many options. Head to Bubba Gump’s Shrimp House for family fun or for a bit fancier, try Fish Tale’s or San Luis Resort, which also happens to have a super cool bar to hang out at. Joe’s Crab Shack is a great option for their steampots and they even have a pasta option. This is a great group or family restaurant and very beachy. There are two locations.
One of our favorites is Olympia, on the main drag across from the beach. This Greek wonder is often overlooked, but I have to admit, one year we ate there 4 times. Yes, I said 4 times. The food is wonderful and the dress is casual. Just don’t forget dessert! Olympia has a sister restaurant downtown on Pier 1. It is a bit more upscale and perfect for a night out.
