Finding yourself with a harvest of green cherry tomatoes? They’re perfect to make this green cherry tomato relish recipe! Enjoy it on soft goat cheese, cream cheese, or on sandwiches made with pork or turkey.
No matter what the weather has in store for our tomatoes, we are ALWAYS left with an abundance of green tomatoes. There is probably nothing better in life than fried green tomatoes, bacon, crisp lettuce, sweet onion, and homemade bread, toasted and slathered with a lemony homemade mayonnaise.
BUT, one cannot live on sandwiches alone and the green tomatoes are calling to be used. So, the canning pot comes out and we start with green tomato chutney and finish with green tomato relish. You see, in our house, my dad was born in Kentucky and raised in West Virginia, where pinto beans with green tomato relish and cornbread is food for the gods.
The chutney is for the New York girl and goes well with goat cheese and any dish requiring the ginger, garlic, sweet acidic taste of green tomatoes. But, today is Green Tomato Relish Day, so go for it! Remember, the Holidays are coming and a gift from the pantry is truly the greatest gift of all. There’s nothing better in the dead of winter than reaching for that jar of canned fruit, tomatoes, or this green cherry tomato relish.
How to Make Green Cherry Tomato Relish
This recipe makes 3 cups of relish. It is delicious with soft goat cheese, cream cheese, or on sandwiches made with pork or turkey. I also like it in tomato soup to make curried tomato soup.
Ingredients
- 6 C quartered green cherry tomatoes
- 2 apples peeled and chopped same size as tomatoes
- 1 C chopped onion
- 1″ ginger grated
- 1 t sea salt
- 1/2 t chili flakes
- 1 C dark or light brown sugar
- 1 C cider vinegar
- 2 t chopped garlic
- 1/4 t cumin
- 2 cinnamon sticks about 2″ each
- 1/2 t ground cloves
- 1 t ground ginger
Directions
- Put all ingredients in a non-reactive pot.
- Bring to a boil stirring, so not to stick.
- Cook at a very low simmer for 1 hour 20 minutes or until thick.
- Process your green cherry tomato relish for 10 minutes if putting up for winter.
