Going home is always a good thing. And I am not talking about just getting to your house each day. I am talking about going home, back to your roots, back to the everyday things that remind you of being home with friends or family. Sometimes it’s not even an actual place, but home almost always involves food. Whatever you eat at home is your comfort food. For me, this pulled beer recipe is the epitome of home.
Going home for me means my mom’s cooking. I don’t care how old you get, eating something prepared by the person who raised you is just the Generally it is classic American comfort foods, hearty and homemade.
What are the most popular comfort foods?
As you can most likely guess, the most popular comfort foods include: pizza, chocolate, ice cream, mac-and-cheese, pasta, chips and burgers.
When I think of comfort foods there are so many that come to mind- but being in the kitchen with my mom making all the things she has made for years is always at the top. If you were to ask any of my siblings, children or my husband, David about what their favorite comfort foods entail, I’m sure this Pulled Beef recipe would be on their lists. It is so good I wanted to share the whole meal with you.
My favorite comfort food memory.
I remember one of the times we made the pulled beef recipe is when we were at my Mom and Dad’s house with the twins. The twins both went to college in the Northeast near my parent’s home so we used their place as our meeting place during those college years. I think there is still some of the twins’ stuff in their basement…
This meal was perfect as I sent the twins back off to college. The fact I was able to make it with my mom was a bonus. It brought comfort to all on many levels.
One of our favorite recipes for lunch or dinner is this pulled beef recipe on a homemade bun served with several side dishes. We got quite ambitious and made Warm Potato Salad, coleslaw, and baked beans. Of course, I add some bread and butter pickles to my sandwich. This is such delicious comfort food. Heaven!
Let’s get started on making the Pulled Beef recipe on homemade buns with coleslaw.
First things first, we need to make the buns! Don’t be scared off by the homemade buns, as they are so delicious and worth the effort.
To make the buns, you will need:
- 2 1/4 tsp active dry yeast
- 1 C bread flour
- 1 C all-purpose flour
- 1/2-1 C whole wheat flour
- 1 C warm water
- 1 large egg
- 1 tbsp light cream
- 3 tbsp melted butter
- 1 tbsp sugar
- 1 1/4 tbsp salt
For the egg wash
- Beat the egg with the light cream
PREPARATION
- Line a cookie sheet with parchment paper.
- Put the yeast, 1/2 C all-purpose flour, and 1 tsp sugar into a bowl or a mixer.
- With wire whisk, add egg, melted butter, 2 tsp sugar, and salt to the yeast mixture.
- Add the rest of the flour, starting with 1/2 C at a time. (All flours are different and depending on the mix of flours you use, adjust the amount accordingly until you get a sticky dough).
- Change to the dough hook and knead for 10 minutes and add more flour if needed.
- Form dough into a ball on the work surface, using a little flour if needed.
- Roll in a bowl that has been greased with butter or oil – make sure the entire ball is coated.
- Cover with saran wrap and a towel and let rise in a warm place until doubled. This might take as much as two hours.
- Turn dough out and pat out air bubbles and form into pie shape about 1/2 ” thick.
- Cut with a knife into 10-12 pie-shaped pieces.
- Tuck and roll to make a ball with the ends twisted at the bottom to seal.
- Flatten with your hand to about 1/2″.
- Put dough on cookie sheets about 1 inch apart and cover with saran that has been oiled or make sure there is enough flour on rolls, so the saran doesn’t stick to them. I like to sprinkle with flour.
- Let your homemade rolls rise for 1 hour.
- Remove saran wrap and brush carefully with egg wash.
- Bake your homemade buns at 375 for about 15 minutes or until golden brown.

I am a home cook that does things my way. In my kitchen, I make breakfast, pack lunches, prepare snacks, and cook dinner. During the week, we eat real food that is homemade, organic, and local. On the weekends we do explore more of our local restaurants. I bake my own bread, juice fresh oranges every other day, and make my own kombucha and other weekly favorites.
I would love to make this for this weekend. But not sure I can do the homemade buns. Might be a bit too complicated for my skill level. How lucky you are to have a mom as a chef!!!
Hi Marilyn. Maybe start with just the pulled beef and slaw and work your way up to the homemade buns. They are really good so worth the time and effort…But the barbecue is just as good on it’s own.
