Hot Cocoa Bombs are all the rage. Who wouldn’t love orbs of chocolate filled with cocoa mix and marshmallows burst open to spill chocolatey goodness. It’s sure to become your favorite cold weather beverage.
If you haven’t heard of or tried Hot Cocoa Bombs, it’s time. They are literally all the rage. Even places like Etsy, Costco, and Target sell them plus many bakeries. Besides the basic chocolate, they come in a variety of flavors like Caramel Macciato, Bananas Foster, and Cookies and Cream.
But there’s no reason to buy them. These wonderful cozy treats are a blast to concoct and make the perfect DIY project. The flavors you choose are only limited by your imagination.
What exactly are Hot Cocoa Bombs?
The basic hot chocolate bomb is made with just three ingredients; chocolate, cocoa mix, and marshmallows. The recipe I’m sharing is made with semi-sweet chocolate chips, hot chocolate powder, and mini marshmallows. To make them, individual chocolate sphere molds are filled with the cocoa mix and marshmallows and frozen (recipe below).
You can turn these into gourmet hot cocoa by adding a bit of instant coffee, crushed candy canes, caramels, or anything else you can think of to the inside and get fancy with the types of chocolate and decorations. But this recipe will give you a great basic start to hot cocoa bombs.
You then place the “bomb” in a mug, pour hot milk over it and like magic, watch the bomb split open, releasing the cocoa mix and marshmallows.
The chocolate shell melts resulting in the richest, most decadent hot cocoa you could dream of. A quick stir mixes everything together.
A few how-tos to get you started.
Semi-sweet chocolate vs milk chocolate…Semi-sweet is closer to dark chocolate than milk chocolate. It has a little bit more of the bitter taste than milk chocolate and is higher in cocoa content. Milk chocolate is creamier and smoother due to the added milk fats. You never want to substitute milk chocolate for semi-sweet in recipes.
Melting…I do not have a microwave so all the melting I do happens in a double boiler. With a double boiler, you need to remember to keep the heat to just a low boil and keep stirring. The instructions below are for melting in the microwave to make things easy.
Sifting…If you do not have a sifter use your finest mesh colander and a wooden spoon and stir sugar until it all sifts through the colander.
Milk…You can use any type of milk you like. I prefer a whole organic milk. I think the full fat milk adds a smoother texture.
Making your own hot chocolate powder…You can also make your own hot chocolate powder very easily. Just mix together the following ingredients.
Hot Chocolate Powder Recipe

You will need 1/3 cup for each portion. This recipe will make about 32 portions. You can also add a little cinnamon if you like the flavor.
Hot Cocoa Bombs
Servings: 6
Prep time: 5 minutes
Cook time: 20 minutes (to cool/freeze)
Total time: 25 minutes
Ingredients:
- ½ bag (6 oz) semi-sweet chocolate chips
- 6 tbsp hot chocolate powder (more or less depending on your preference)
- About 24 mini marshmallows (more or less depending on your preference)
- 1 tbsp vegetable oil
Instructions:
- Put your chocolate chips and oil in a medium sized bowl in a double boiler and stir until fully melted. If you have a microwave, you can melt in 30 second intervals until completely melted.
- Add your chocolate to the hot cocoa bomb mold. Make sure every part of the circle is covered in chocolate. Try to make the chocolate coating thick as the thinner the layer of chocolate the easier it could break.
- Freeze your mold and chocolate.
- Once the chocolate has hardened, remove from the mold.
- Fill one half of the mold with your marshmallows and hot chocolate powder.
- Warm a small plate in the microwave for 30 seconds. Take the other half of the bomb and twist your hand from left to right. The chocolate will start to melt on the edges.
- Place the two rounds to melt together. The round that was melted on the edge will act as a sealant and melt the chocolate together to form a round ball (bomb) shape.
- Place in your favorite mug, pour hot milk over it, watch the magic happen, and enjoy! (Video credit Sweets by Jen LLC).
These hot chocolate bombs also make wonderful gifts. You can decorate the bombs with seasonal decorations to give them an added flare and wrap for the holidays.

I am a home cook that does things my way. In my kitchen, I make breakfast, pack lunches, prepare snacks, and cook dinner. During the week, we eat real food that is homemade, organic, and local. On the weekends we do explore more of our local restaurants. I bake my own bread, juice fresh oranges every other day, and make my own kombucha and other weekly favorites.
